Background Information

The Mission of Light One Little Candle, now in over 15 national Cancer institutes around the county, and in San Diego, housed at UCSD Moores Cancer Center is to take the time to read to your kids, to develop a strong family bond and instill in them a lifetime love of learning. It's a simple message from our educators, but not so simple for families where a parent or other caregiver is stricken by cancer. Taking time to focus on the children can take last place on the priority list when hospital visits, doctor's visits, and treatments take up all the patients' energy, leaving kids scared, hurt, angry, or just plain confused. Light One Little Candle gifts the family of a cancer patient who is also a caregiver with a classic children's book, to take home to the the children in their lives, and share time together READING!

CSA Support

With the generous $500 Grant from Community Service Association, Light One Little Candle - San Diego is able to replenish our book cart with classic children's book titles, such as The Hungry Caterpillar, Curious George, Dr. Seuss Classics, Charlotte's Web, Tom Sawyer, Little Women, books from infant age to chapter books for teenagers. The book cart, with usually over 100 books on it, ready for gifting, is kept in the Patient Resource Center where anyone who inquiries and fits the correct circumstances, a caregiver receiving treatment at Moores, can choose a book off the cart for the child/children in their lives. Furthermore our books are gifted and given out by Light One Little Candle -San Diego volunteers, who weekly push our book cart through the numerous waiting rooms at UCSD Moores Cancer Center and through the Infusion Area. There the volunteers talk to those at Moores receiving cancer treatment and explain Light One Little Candle's mission and a desire for them to take a book home to share with the children in their lives. It is really the last thing most of these ill individuals expect, and because it is such a beautiful gesture, many are sincerely, and deeply moved. Since many of these patients are at Moores for multiple visits for months on end, we are able to hear how the books we give out assist these families in endless ways. Painful discussions that often must take place, are eased but first enjoying the playfulness of HUG or How to Eat Fried Worms. If caregivers energy is not able to get them to watch the soccer game, but they can sit together on a sofa and read Treasure Island, well then life gets a whole lot better.

With CSA's grant you are allowing Light One Little Candle to continue to touch so many with the wonder of what a gift of a book can do to those who need something unexpected in times of difficulty.

Thank you ever so much.
