Maternity & Childcare Leave Options

Congratulations! As a pregnant employee or new mother you have several options to care for your health as well as that of your child.

For the period of time immediately preceding or following the birth of your child, most employees utilize their accrued leaves (e.g. sick and/ or vacation leave) for the time they are unable to work. The use of this leave is a paid leave and lasts until you have exhausted those leave balances. A physician's excuse is required to access this leave. The duration of this leave depends upon the doctor's orders.

During the period of absence, you will need to submit leave forms, signed by your physician, to the site/work location. One card is submitted per month (to the site) following the payroll timelines (16th to the 15th of each month).

After the doctor's full medical release following the birth of a child, you may return to work or request one or more of the following unpaid leaves of absence:

  • Family Medical Care Leave
12 workweeks within a 12-month period without pay; benefits are paid (refer to Leave of Absence Request Form, side two).

  • Long Term Leave of Absence
Only permanent and probationary employees may request a long-term parental leave of absence (without paid benefits) for the balance of a calendar or academic school year. This may be extended from year to year for a period not to exceed two additional calendar years for classified employees; three additional academic school years for certificated.

Please refer questions and/ or submit formal leave requests forms to the Human Resource Services Division
