San Diego High School's Jaime Brown was named one of five County Teachers of the Year at the 27th Annual Salute to Teachers event hosted by the San Diego County Office of Education and Cox Communications.
Brown teaches IB English and Film at San Diego High School of International Studies.
Brown was among three San Diego Unified District Teachers of the Year eligible for the county honor. Other nominees included Claudia Sanchez-Guevara from Bethune K-8 and Vanessa Hart from De Portola Middle.
Along with Brown, the following individuals were named 2017-18 County Teachers of the Year: Camden Flores, Kempton Street Literacy Academy, Mark Lantsberger, Del Norte High School, Ben Swearingen, Imperial Beach Charter School, and Kathy Worley, West Hills High School. These five individuals will represent San Diego County in the California Teacher of the Year program. The state winner will be announced later this year.
There were a total of 44 teachers nominated for 2017-18 County Teacher of the Year honors out of approximately 22,000 current teachers in the region. Finalists were selected based on student achievement, teaching philosophy, familiarity with current issues in education, and community involvement.
Brown joins a distinguished list of San Diego Unified teachers to be recognized at the County level. Shirley Miranda, formerly of Morse High School, was named County Teacher of the Year 2016 and Wilson Middle School's Khamphet Pease was named County Teacher of the Year in 2015.
The Annual Salute to Teachers is an Oscars-style black-tie event that honors the teaching profession. Student performances during the show included show choirs from Lakeside Middle and Carlsbad High schools, and San Diego Christian Youth Theater's cast of “The Lion King.”
If you missed the live broadcast, "Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers" telecast will replay on YurView Channel 4/1004 San Diego at 9 p.m. on the following dates: Sept. 17, 23 and 28 and Oct. 6, 12, 20 and 26.
