Title IX

Our Title IX team is responsible for assessing and responding to all reports of sex-based harassment, sex discrimination, and sexual misconduct in accordance with federal law and District policies. We advise individuals of their rights, coordinate with sites to implement supportive measures to protect our students, oversee the investigation and adjudication of formal complaints, and conduct district-wide training and prevention efforts.

Addressing sex-based harassment, discrimination, and gender-based violence is a priority for the District. Title IX program has recently undergone several changes in order to swiftly address reported misconduct and ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and community.

In 2023, the Title IX program joined the District Office of Investigations, Compliance & Accountability (ICA). ICA’s Title IX team includes:

  • The Title IX Officer who coordinates the District’s practices, supports both parties throughout the process, whether a formal complaint is filed or not, to ensure there is a fair and equitable grievance process in accordance with federal regulations and District policies.
  • 5 Investigative Specialists assist with the intake, documentation and immediate response to all reports of sexual harassment.
  • 5 Internal Investigators conduct fair and impartial investigations when an allegation, if proven, constitutes a violation of Title IX.
  • The Equity Compliance Coordinator supports in the Title IX process and serves as the Uniform Complaint and Title II Compliance Officer.

Everyone in the ICA Office has specialized Title IX training and follows trauma-informed practices. We are dedicated to upholding our District’s commitment, that all of our students and employees are entitled to an educational and employment environment that is free of sex discrimination, sex-based harassment, sexual misconduct and retaliation.

More information about our policies and procedures, reporting process, and resources can be found on this website.

OVERVIEW

Title IX is a federal law passed in 1972 to ensure that male and female students and employees in educational settings are treated equally and fairly. It protects against discrimination based on sex (including sexual harassment). In addition, Title IX protects transgender students and students who do not conform to gender stereotypes. State law also prohibits discrimination based on gender (sex), gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation. The preamble to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states that:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Title IX requires that each school district have at least one person designated as the Title IX Coordinator.
