SAN DIEGO (November 14, 2017) - The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education has authorized the Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA) to launch a new non-profit foundation that will serve to further enhance arts education programs in the district. The new non-profit will offer visual and performing arts scholarships for students and grants for teachers starting in the 2018-2019 school year.

The VAPA Foundation intends to enhance the quality of arts education within the San Diego Unified community by promoting artistic literacy, increasing professional development of teachers, investing in musical instruments, and collaborating with community arts organizations to create additional opportunities for students, grades TK-12, to access education experiences related to the visual and performing arts.

The launch of the foundation comes as a direct result of the community's continual demand for arts education both in public surveys and public comment. Developing a foundation that supports arts education in our community helps support a brighter future for young San Diegans, and is critical in supporting our dynamic economy.

The district recognizes that arts education truly does transform lives, and the new foundation will allow San Diego Unified to reach even more students through scholarships and teacher grants. Nearly $20,000 in mini-grants will be available to VAPA educators throughout the district for the 2018-2019 school year. Additionally, student scholarships will allow our students to pursue higher education in the arts and ultimately pursue their dream careers.
