NEWS RELEASE - San Diego Unified to update facilities design standards to include more gender-neutral, single-user restrooms
San Diego Unified announced it will update design standards to include more gender-neutral, single-user restrooms in future facilities. Single-user, unisex restrooms in existing facilities will be converted with gender-neutral signage, in alignment with Assembly Bill 1732. Estimated completion for upgrades to current facilities is March 2017. Single-user restrooms in facilities that are currently in construction will also be updated with gender-neutral signage.
“San Diego Unified is dedicated to maintaining quality schools in every neighborhood, and we believe that quality schools are welcoming to all students and families,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “These positive changes create safer, more convenient restroom access to our diverse community and support San Diego Unified's mission. We constantly encourage students to raise their voices, and student voices have been central to this effort. We're also grateful for the support we've received from our LGBTQIA allies.”
“This might seem like a small change, but to some, it sends a strong message that our district is committed to supporting all students attending our schools,” added Sophia Arredondo, program manager for LGBTQIA Education and Advocacy. “It reinforces our commitment to diversity.”
