Background Information

WRC has been serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the North County for over forty years. The agency started as a crisis hotline and has grown to providing case management, counseling, legal advocacy, emergency confidential shelter, transitional housing, community outreach and preventative education. WRC's emergency shelter is able to provide 26 beds to women, men, and children who are in need of a secret and safe place to stay. For many of those one month is not long enough to handle all the legal, counseling, and financial matters in order to find stability. Transitional Housing at our location provides just over 20 families with a longer 2 year stay. Enabling the family to rebuild and step out on their own with confidence and financial security. Through WRC's education of future generations, victim empowerment and community awareness, we will create an environment where domestic violence and sexual assault are neither tolerated nor accepted.

CSA Support

WRC reached out to the Community Service Association seeking a grant that will help our agency provide prescription and nonprescription medication to the children who are non-Medi-Cal eligible. Children are the primary focus for many of our clients and their well-being is the primary reason victims will stay in a violent household. Financial dependency and isolation from resources occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases. It is the primary tool used by an abuser to keep the victim trapped in a relationship. Allowing the parent to provide for their children's medical needs with the help of these funds removes a roadblock. Just recently while staying in our shelter a child was in need of their asthma medication. The child was covered under the abusers insurance however the prescription was not fully covered. The mother was also afraid to fill the prescription at a new location fearing it would notify the abuser of her whereabouts. WRC was able to provide the funds to purchase the medication and a case worker went to their usual pharmacy to pick it up. This scenario is very common and problematic for our clients. The funds from this grant provide for a need and maintain the safety of our families.
