The John Brockington Foundation has responded to the local crisis of over 1900 San Diegans on the waitlist for a kidney with its educational outreach program, WELD (Women Encouraging Living Donation). A group of women transplant surgeons, donors, recipients, transplant coordinators, nephrologists, and social workers, WELD seeks to increase, encourage, and support living donation through its public facing education campaign: 5 local billboards, the WELD website and Facebook page, speaking engagements, and media outreach. The UT article and half hour interview with surgeon and donor on 7 local radio stations are just two recent examples of making living donation part of the conversation in San Diego. In conjunction with the $10,000 patient assistance funds for each of the 4 local transplant centers, WELD seeks to minimize expenses for donor and recipient for those fortunate enough to have a willing donor.
San Diego lost 140 patients on the waitlist in 2016 either through death or removal because dialysis made them too sick to be transplanted. This is a medical crisis with a cure-living donation. The misconceptions surrounding it-that the donor has to be young, that a match is needed for the transplant to occur, that it is a risky surgery with life-long effects donor-are the areas in which those who've experienced it can be most effective in dispelling. WELD speaks with patients, their families, and living donor candidates by phone, in face to face meetings, and in an educational Home Visit with their network of family and friends.
WELD's speaking bureau is all volunteer-speakers and management of the bureau are donated time.
CSA's Support
CSA's support of $500 will purchase 50 Explore Living Donation packets in English and Spanish providing videos and materials to help patients and their families and friends understand the need and experience of living donation.
